S novým rokem pro vás máme i novou pravidelnou rubriku. Loni jsme si představili znamení zvěrokruhu, teď se ale podíváme trochu jiným směrem. Společně totiž projdeme vývoj žánru, který milujeme, a to prostřednictvím rychlého recapu pro každý rok a 5 tracků, které pro nás daný rok symbolizují 🤓 

Právě teď je ta správná chvíle začít, Drum & Bass totiž dovršil 30 let své existence…it’s time to return to the source, it’s time to return to the jungle! 🌴

Tedy, názory na tohle výročí se různí, my ale rok 1993 považujeme za ten první, kdy se dá už tak nějak mluvit o tom, že ze žánru Jungle začíná vznikat něco nového, do té doby neslýchaného. Dají se pozorovat nové vlivy, tempo začíná zrychlovat, zvuk začíná být čistší, strojovější… 🥁

Ale nepředbíhejme, v roce 1993 se scéna teprve formovala. Z labelů, které dodnes fungují, v té době existoval jediný – legendární RAM Records Andyho C (a tehdy i Anta Milese). Scéně vládnul (Hardcore) Jungle a Darkcore, mezi nejvýznamnější jména vznikajícího žánru se tou dobou řadili třeba 2 Bad Mice, 4 Hero, Dillinja, DJ Hype, DJ Rap, Doc Scott, Goldie, LTJ Bukem, Randall a další. Rozvoj se pak soustředil okolo labelů jako Moving Shadow, Reinforced Records nebo Suburban Base Records 💿

Dnešnímu posluchači může znít tehdejší hudba tak trochu zastarale, na druhou stranu je na ní velmi dobře slyšet odklon od původních devadesátkových zlomených beatů směrem k nově vznikajícímu žánru. Navíc, Jungle v posledních letech zažívá renesanci a proniká i do mainstreamu/dalších žánrů elektronické hudby, a tady tímhle se ta aktuální tvorba inspiruje 💡

With the new year, we’re bringing you a brand-new regular feature. Last year, we explored zodiac signs, but now we’re taking a slightly different direction. Together, we’ll walk through the evolution of the genre we love via a quick recap of each year and 5 tracks that symbolize that year for us 🤓

Right now is the perfect time to start because Drum & Bass has just turned 30 years old… it’s time to return to the source, it’s time to return to the jungle! 🌴 

That said, opinions on this anniversary vary. We, however, consider 1993 to be the year when we can start talking about something new emerging from the Jungle genre—something unheard of until then. You can observe new influences, tempos starting to speed up, and the sound becoming cleaner and more mechanical 🥁

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. In 1993, the scene was still taking shape. Of the labels still active today, there was only one at the time—the legendary RAM Records, founded by Andy C (and back then also Ant Miles). The scene was dominated by (Hardcore) Jungle and Darkcore, and among the most prominent names in the emerging genre were 2 Bad Mice, 4 Hero, Dillinja, DJ Hype, DJ Rap, Doc Scott, Goldie, LTJ Bukem, Randall, and others. The development centered around labels such as Moving Shadow, Reinforced Records, and Suburban Base Records 💿

To today’s listeners, the music of that era might sound a bit outdated. On the other hand, it’s easy to hear the shift away from the broken beats of the early ’90s towards a newly emerging genre. Moreover, Jungle has been experiencing a renaissance in recent years, penetrating mainstream and other genres of electronic music, and this is precisely what inspires the current wave of creativity 💡
