Tohle je Drum & Bass: 1997

V květnu se v našem putování historií žánru vracíme do roku 1997, kdy drum & bass doslova a do písmene zválcovaly rollery 🤯 Beat se narovnal a mysl posluchačů ovládla hypnotická basová linka a nezastavitelná kadence bicích. Drum & bass se také poprvé ve své (v té době poměrně krátké) historii ocitnul na výsluní popularity, Roni Size a jeho uskupení Reprazent totiž vydali přelomové album „New Forms“, se kterým se jim podařilo vyhrát prestižní britské ocenění Mercury Prize a nesmazatelně se tak zapsat do hudební historie 🎖️

Ano, prim v té době hrála především bristolská scéna, kterou hrdě reprezentovali právě Roni Size, dále pak DJ Die (+ jejich společný projekt Scorpio) a Krust – začátky všech jsou spojeny s legendárním labelem V Recordings Bryana Gee, Krust a Roni Size si ale velmi brzy založili také vlastní label Full Cycle. Na těchto dvou labelech se pak soustředila v následujících letech většina jejich sólové i společné tvorby. Svůj vlastní label Charge zakládá další výrazná postava žánru, Mampi Swift. Významnou roli i nadále hrály i další labely jako Metalheadz, Moving Shadow nebo True Playaz, růžky pomalu, ale jistě začíná vystrkovat také rozvíjející se Renegade Hardware, na kterém své první releasy vydávají Darren White (dBridge) a Jason Maldini (Maldini, Subphonics) jako Future Forces Inc. – tahle kapitola vývoje techstepu, ke které patří samozřejmě i další jména jako Dom & Roland, Dylan, Ed Rush, Fierce, Genotype, Optical, Matrix, Technical Itch a další, předznamenává novou éru, o které si povíme zase příště 👀

In May, our journey through the history of the genre takes us back to 1997, a year when drum & bass was literally and figuratively dominated by rollers 🤯. The beats straightened out, and listeners’ minds were captivated by hypnotic basslines and unstoppable drum cadences. For the first time in its (then relatively short) history, drum & bass found itself in the spotlight of mainstream popularity. Roni Size and his group Reprazent released the groundbreaking album New Forms, which earned them the prestigious Mercury Prize and etched their name into music history 🎖️

Yes, the Bristol scene took the lead at the time, proudly represented by Roni Size, DJ Die (+ their joint project Scorpio), and Krust. While their beginnings were tied to the legendary label V Recordings, run by Bryan Gee, Krust and Roni Size soon founded their own label, Full Cycle. In the years that followed, most of their solo and collaborative work was released on these two labels. Another prominent figure in the genre, Mampi Swift, launched his own label, Charge.

Other key labels like Metalheadz, Moving Shadow, and True Playaz continued to play significant roles. Meanwhile, the emerging Renegade Hardware label began to make its mark, with early releases by Darren White (dBridge) and Jason Maldini (Maldini, Subphonics) under the name Future Forces Inc.
